The project was designed on one of the last few vacant plots in Bağcılar. For this reason, the client requested that many different functions needed by the district be addressed together in this area. Programs such as a student dormitory, youth center, daycare, and underground parking, which required circulation and indoor-outdoor spaces to be resolved without interfering with each other, were designed together.
To solve this challenge, a platform equal in size to the plot was created 5 meters above the ground level, creating two distinct ground floors. This allowed for the creation of two separate public open spaces to serve the functions of the youth center and dormitory individually. The Youth Center was placed in the open space at sidewalk level. Deep cuts in the structure increased the building’s façade length, thereby maximizing the interaction between the youth center and the neighborhood, as well as the amount of light the building receives. The youth center was designed with an open-plan layout. The functions were arranged autonomously on this entirely uninterrupted platform, ensuring they do not touch each other. This also allowed for the functions to be perceived from all directions and enabled spontaneous interactions in the spaces between them. The area immediately in front of the structure was left as a green park for neighborhood use.
